Carlos Ferreira - Hakanai
by Tom Ojendyk
Carlos Ferreira’s Hakanai is 40 minutes of slow moving and warm ambient drone by a Brazilian guitarist who has released several fine recordings over the past couple years. The music is very minimal and lo-fi, but still quite rich and inviting. Inspired by Japanese writer Yasunari Kawabata, the title translates to “transient, short-lived, momentary, or ephemeral,” which are all great words to describe the music itself. Subtle melodies and/or drones gradually appear and eventually dissipate, and the music is contemplative and enigmatic with the blurry production only adding to its calming character.
