Clock DVA - White Souls in Black Suits
by Tom Ojendyk
Sheffield’s legendary Clock DVA probably doesn’t need much of an introduction to most readers considering how influential this long running band has been over the decades. Formed in 1978, and local contemporaries of the Human League and Cabaret Voltaire, Clock DVA originally released White Souls in Black Suits on cassette in 1980 on Throbbing Gristle’s label, Industrial Records. Now remastered with an additional four tracks recorded around the same time period, this is prime post-punk experimentalism that touches upon 70s German underground, avant-garde, proto-punk, and, to me, an occasional Captain Beefheart influence with the vocals. Overall, this release might surprise folks who are more familiar with their later records; improvised and recorded in a day, the tracks are endlessly fascinating, eerie, with an abrasiveness that’s captivating and not just abrasive for the sake of it. Probably more likely to clear a room than pack a dance floor, this release is highly recommended if you are into early industrial music.
