Dope Purple - Children in The Darkness
by Tom Ojendyk
Taiwanese heavy psychedelic scum freaks Dope Purple plus guests Yong Yandsen (tenor saxophone) and Darren Moore (percussion, voice) recorded Children in The Darkness live in the studio in the dead of night and have unleashed some of their most ferocious space rock so far. While their name is a play on Deep Purple who, oddly, seem underrated nowadays, the music sounds like Hawkwind filtered through the loudest of the P.S.F. Records catalog like High Rise, Musica Transonic, or the still active and awesome Acid Mother’s Temple. Noisy, fuzzed-out riffs are blasted loud while synthesizers sound like they are in search of space and the saxophone wails like the Second Coming of the Stooges’ Funhouse. Recommended if long jams that peel faces and shred ears are your thing.
