Earthen Sea - Ghost Poems
by Tom Ojendyk
Jacob Long’s wonderful, long-running Earthen Sea project’s latest release is gorgeous, with sparse ambient music that’s slowing-moving but rhythmic, subtle and memorable. I was previously only familiar with his early 2000’s DC band Black Eyes who recorded two excellent records on Dischord that skillfully married post-hardcore with more experimental elements of free improvisation and dub before splintering off to various other projects. This release was composed during the first Covid lockdown and Long said he focused on “the studio as a dub instrument,” which gives the music a mysterious, skeletal feel. Using samples, various FX and electronics, as well as common daily sounds, the short pieces are intimate and personal as well as completely engaging.
