John Also Bennett - Out there in the middle of nowhere

by Tom Ojendyk

Using a 1940’s Oahu laptop, a synth, and some field recordings, Bennett’s latest release is a bare and haunting minimalist journey that utilizes slow-moving melodies on top of stark electronics. Motivated by a trip through the South Dakota badlands, Bennett successfully captures the feeling of the desolation of the terrain with the music, feeling vast and bewildering. Out there in the middle of nowhere requires patience, as Bennett allows for a lot of breathing room so reverberated notes can hover in space before getting lost. The pieces are mostly centered around creating an atmosphere and have an almost cinematic quality to them but everything is engaging and successfully captures the mood of the landscape.
