Raspy and John - Music for People Who Like Cats
by Tom Ojendyk
As a person who likes cats and ambient music, this release is a perfect fit. Per the release bio, Raspy was an adopted stray cat that become a good buddy to John and he started recording her on his phone and then used the recordings as a foundation to the music. The cat samples are subtle and if I didn’t read in the bio that he used the samples to provide most of the rhythms, I probably would not have caught it. So, rest assured this is nothing like Jingle Cats. Instead, it’s a moving and personal release centered around bonding and loss, and John used a mix of real and virtual instruments to compose the music. The pieces are largely short but have warm melodies and flow well into each other so it’s cohesive. RIP Raspy.
