Teresa Burga - Estructura Propuesta Sonido: Piezas para instalaciones y composiciones de notas al azar

by Tom Ojendyk

Buh Records Oskana Linde compilation was one of the best archival releases from 2022, and the label is continuing their winning streak with this fascinating release by Peruvian artist Teresa Burga. I wasn’t familiar with Burga, but the in-depth liner notes provide a fine overview of her art as well as thorough explanations of the tracks, which were produced by Burga in conjunction with various art pieces. Even without knowledge of the corresponding art or installations, the music—or sound pieces—stand on their own, at times sounding like musique concrète, other times like warped acoustic folk. Burga used her heartbeat in one piece, which originally accompanied an art installation that was centered around photos of her face, along with medical information. Initially, it sounded like an unsteady lo-fi kick drum, reminding me of the late Milford Graves who preferred to listen to the heart instead of a metronome. Other pieces are a bit more traditional, but no less wonderful, and feature contributions by guitarist Nicolás Wangeman, singer and synth player Alma Laprida, and Alan Courtis from noted Argentinian experimental group, Reynols. While it would be great to have experienced the music presented along with the original art pieces, enjoying Estructura Propuesta Sonido at home is the next best thing.
