Hainbach shows that he can master more than your grandfather’s broken down test equipment with his upbeat new album, Assertion, recorded during—and addressing in the way only Hainbach can—the ongoing pandemic. At times both beautiful and [gasp!] nearly danceable, Assertion has many gems. Starting off with the somber pulse and piano touches of the oddly titled "East End Boys", then on to "Landstraße 2020", and its head-nodding droney bedroom dance shag, past its title track, and to the end, Assertion is a well textured, nicely layered listen throughout...that has some almost [gasp!] dance-y tracks. Who’d a thought something as awful as a global pandemic could somehow bring about something so positive?
