Empathy, Oakland resident Joel St. Julien’s latest and first physical release, is a hazy, dripping affair with long sustained chordal purges that slowly bubble to the surface, loitering amongst the normals, before returning from whence they came. Each track on Empathy flows like a river of concentrate, barely reaching its destination, barely reaching any destination at all. Stars of the Lid, Boards of Canada, a morphinated electronic symphony in the distance—next time I find myself awake past 4 am, over-worked from a night of clubbing [or ahem…editing], this will be my go-to come up/down. Beautiful.
