Quicksails is Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist Ben Baker Billington’s experimental project and with his new release he uses modular and digital synthesizers to create atmospheric music that ranges from melodic and lush to occasionally intense and dissonant. The music was recorded over a few years and at moments channels German band Popol Vuh whose mastermind Florian Fricke is referenced in the track title, “Florian’s Brush.” The production is well-layered and never overbearing, often a risk with this type of music; grandiose without being melodramatic. A very fine release by an artist I was previously not familiar with. I look forward to further explorations.
